Andy Burnham’s ex-advisor discusses possibility of Labour pact with Greens at party conference

Andy Burnham’s former adviser has discussed the possibility of Labour working with the Green Party after attending the latter's party conference in Brighton.

Kevin McKeever, who advised the Prime Minister during his Makerfield by-election win this year, said he could foresee a scenario where the parties could work together to prevent a Reform government.

As to why he was personally attending the Green Party conference, he said: “I’m definitely not switching sides, but it's always good to hear what others are saying.”

Looking ahead to the next vote, he said Mr Burnham’s objective should be to return a Labour majority.

“My advice to Andy Burnham would be that the objective of the next general election is to have a Labour majority.

“So we’ll be fighting seats, including one that will be contested by the Green Party, to return a Labour Member of Parliament,” Mr McKeever said.

However, he stopped short of ruling out cooperation with the Greens after the election.

“You have to see what the state of play is the day after a general election,” he said.

“You’ve got to deal with the politics as you find it. Let the people vote. See where the votes for what that means for seats, and then take it from there.”

Asked directly whether Labour would talk to the Green Party and Liberal Democrats to prevent a Reform UK government in a hung parliament, Mr McKeever replied: “Yeah, I think they probably would.”

With the prospect of an alliance between Labour and the hard-left Greens, GB News presenter Dawn Neesom asked how the two parties would reach consensus.

“The issue that many people have with the current Green Party is the fact that they don't really recognise what women are,” she said.

“They don't agree with women's rights. That’s been a very divisive issue for them and potentially for Labour.”

“It's an ongoing dialogue across the political spectrum with different angles on that issue depending on your politics,” Mr McKeever said.

“What I would say is there are plenty of people here who I recognised from the Labour Party 12 months ago, so who knows where they'll be in 12 months.”
