'Fig-leaf gesture!' Expert blasts Labour for 'patting itself on the back' and paying migrants to leave the UK

The Labour Government has been accused of using "fig-leaf gestures" to mask a failing deportation system after it was revealed that thousands of "removed" migrants actually left voluntarily or were handed taxpayer-funded "sweeteners" to go.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has sparked fury after "trumpeting" a headline figure of 60,000 removals, claiming she is doing "whatever it takes" to restore order to Britain’s borders.

Deportations of foreign national offenders have risen by 32 per cent, with more than 8,700 deported under Labour, it was reported yesterday.

The Home Office also released footage showing a recent removals flight, with detainees, their faces blurred, being escorted on to a plane destined for eastern Europe.

Speaking to Britain's News Channel, Editor of The Daily Sceptic, Laurie Wastell said: "Many of these returns are not even enforced returns, meaning people are not being put on planes and sent back.

"Around a third fall into a category known as verified returns, that’s where the Home Office has listed someone as liable for deportation but without informing the department they have simply left the country.

"The Home Office later discovers this when it checks passenger logs and then pats itself on the back for a job well done because they happened to leave.

"Similarly, around a quarter of these migrants have actually been paid to leave. Labour has disbursed around £40million on this since taking office, meaning illegal migrants may be paid an average of £3,197 per return.

"So you come here illegally and then you get paid to leave. It’s an extraordinary state of affairs. To imagine a system like this represents a real success story for the Home Office is, I think, quite far-fetched."

GB News hots Martin Daubney said: "But the message the Government wants to send is that it’s getting tough clamping down, boots through doors.

"Not quite ICE-style raids, but that’s the impression. The reality is this: if you come to Britain illegally, particularly from a country with which we have no returns deal, you’re about as likely to leave Britain as I am to become an astronaut.

"If we look at the actual figures for enforced returns, that’s only about a quarter of the 60,000. Where are those people going? "

LATEST ON BRITAIN'S MIGRANT CRISIS

The journalist responded: "The Government doesn’t appear to be serious about addressing the problem as a problem.

"What it is serious about is making it look like it’s addressing the problem. That’s how we end up with headline figures like 60,000 removals.

"It sounds tough but when you break it down, it’s far less impressive. If ministers truly wanted to get tough, they would focus on key countries like Pakistan and be far more robust in negotiations.

"Instead, there’s an unwillingness to take substantive steps. The Home Office seems far more interested in fig-leaf gestures that give the impression of action, while obscuring the reality."

After the figures were published, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said removals would be “scaled up” even further.

However, immigration pressures continue to build, with more than 65,000 people having crossed the English Channel since Sir Keir Starmer took office.

The UK is one of several countries facing mounting migration challenges and is pushing for changes to how the treaty is interpreted, particularly Article 3, which prohibits inhuman or degrading treatment, and Article 8, which protects the right to family life.

Both provisions have been used to block the removal of individuals with no legal right to remain in Britain.
