Labour MP racially harassed by man who called him 'English c**t' amid disabled parking row

A Labour MP has been subjected to racial harassment by a constituent who called him an "English c**t" in a dispute about disabled parking.

Mid & South Pembrokeshire MP Henry Tufnell, who grew up on his family's £20million Cotswold estate, was targeted by 59-year-old Michael Glover earlier this year.

Glover admitted causing racially aggravated harassment, alarm or distress ahead of an appearance at Swansea Crown Court last month.

He left a note on Mr Tufnell's constituency office door in Haverfordwest during an incident on March 10.

Glover wrote "f**k you English c**t and Welsh Labour", claimed he was "going to jail for a very long time" and said he had been looking around Mr Tufnell's mother's home.

Regan Walters, prosecuting, told the court that Glover waved at the building's CCTV cameras, stuck his tongue out, and made offensive "hand gestures".

Glover was arrested after being spotted carrying an axe to The William Owen pub the following day.

He told police he hoped the incident would expedite his personal plea with Mr Tufnell to sort a Blue Badge.

Blue Badge applications are assessed in Wales by local councils rather than MPs in Westminster.

It is not established during the reported proceedings whether Glover’s application had been refused, delayed or was still awaiting a decision.

Mr Tufnell, who was once described as Labour's poshest MP, said in a victim statement: "Knowing that Glover knows where I live with my wife and young child has made me rethink things, such as the security of my address."

He also said he had to be mindful that his "panic alarms and CCTV cameras are working" and revealed he felt "on edge, wondering if [his family] are safe" when he was in Westminster.

Swansea Crown Court

Joseph Hocquard, representing Glover, said his client had been in custody for the past four months for breaching a probation order.

He also claimed his client was facing an "incredibly challenging" time due to his mental health and disabilities.

However, Judge Mark Powell KC said: "They [MPs] are entitled to go about their business without being subject to the sort of threats and harassment that you carried out… regardless of if they are English or not English."

Judge Powell gave Glover a six-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, as well as a five-year restraining order.

The 59-year-old will also need to pay a victim surcharge of £154.

Mr Tufnell was elected to the House of Commons for the first time in July 2024.

The 34-year-old won the former Tory seat by 1,878, defeating ex-Welsh Secretary Stephen Crabb.

Mr Tufnell had been accused of having no connection to the constituency when he was unveiled as Labour's candidate.

He had announced he wanted to stand in the Essex seat of Colchester but missed out on selection.

In a short biography on his campaign website he states: “I have been coming to Pembrokeshire since I was a small child with my mum, who was born in Pontypridd and grew up in south Wales. I am originally from a farming family and I am now based outside St Davids.

“Professionally I trained and practised as a barrister before leaving to work as an organiser at a grassroots trade union.”

Mid & South Pembrokeshire is now considered a three-way split between Reform UK, Labour and the Tories.
