Shabana Mahmood's Migration Crackdown – Tough Enough to Win Back Voters?

By WTF Land

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood unveiled a "contribution-based" migration model on September 29, 2025, requiring migrants to wait 10 years for indefinite leave, learn advanced English, volunteer, and have no criminal record. No NHS access for non-contributors. As I analyze this from the heart of London, where immigration debates rage, this is Labour's bid to counter Reform UK's surge. But is it tough enough, or just playing catch-up?

Net migration is 431,000, with 28,000 Channel crossings this year. Mahmood's rules aim to ensure migrants "give back," echoing Reform's calls but softer. Farage dismissed it as "copycat," pushing his 600,000 deports plan.

Protests highlight urgency – 110,000 in London on September 13, clashes in Glasgow on 20 September. Epping hotel eviction on 26 September cheered locals, but Home Office appeals.

Starmer's approval is -56, Labour trailing Reform in polls projecting 311 seats for Farage's party. At Liverpool conference, Starmer urged unity against "racist" Reform.

Experts like Sunder Katwala say it's a start, but unions fear exclusion. With petitions against racism at 2.2 million, the balance is delicate.

Can Mahmood's crackdown win voters back? Time will tell.
